Love in a Nutshell

Love in a Nutshell
Janet Evanovich & Dorien Kelly
Copyright 2011

Love in a Nutshell is a testament to the fact that I am a "non practicing" book snob.  When I buy a book, I don't usually pick a "fluff" title by myself, but I do love to read them.  In this case, I bought the book as a "Just because gift" for a friend and had to make sure that it was good enough for my friend.  Note to all friends, I have made a habit of doing this.  Chances are if I gift you a book, I have "gently" read it myself.  I do this out of concern for your best interests, honestly.

I have only read one Evanovich novel, I think Plum Lovin, and this read much along the same lines, a strong heroine full of sass and brass.   We follow Kate Appleton, a recent divorcee as she attempts to reinvent herself in northern Michigan.  Desperate for a job, she becomes a "private eye" of sorts for Matt Cullhane, a prospering business owner who is being sabotaged by an unknown assailant.  You can guess where this is going, but I'm not sure that the "duh" ending really detracts from the book.  I enjoyed the non-cerebral, quick pace that I found very entertaining.
The only thing that tripped me up is the match-up of Janet Evanovich & Dorien Kelly as co-authors.  The book tone and speed matches Evanovich's other works.  Kelly's bio blip states that she lives in Michigan, so I only associated her with facts on the Mitten State and maybe craft breweries.  And a quick web search ties her to NASCAR and pulp romance, two things I snobbishly avoid.  I hope that this book does give her name recognition and the confidence to break into a new market.

All in all a great evening spent...
Next up: Twain's, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Please bear with me as I post as I read, and this one is a tome)
