Don't you just love when a random selection turns out to be a great read? Perusing Amazon for my free gem, I stumble across
The Dirty Parts of the Bible. Calm down, I did not spend my free time reading some drivel someone else combed out of the Old Testament.
The Dirty Parts of the Bible is a retelling of the story of Tobias and Sarah from
Song of Solomon. It is centered around 20 year old Tobias Henry as he travels from Michigan to Texas in mid-thirties America. Tobias' overbearing father, Reverend Henry set the tone for a 1930's Footloose. No drinking, dancing, or much anything that a teenage boy would consider fun. As such, Tobias is itching to get out from under his thumb and takes on his adventure with great zeal. You can imagine how easy it was for a naive kid to get taken. Luckily, Tobias meets the hobo, Craw, who is a guardian angel of sorts. In addition to keeping Tobias safe physically, Craw helps Tobias tackle sticky spiritual issues. What about the dinosaurs? Who was Cain's wife? Why circumcise?
I found Craw's philosophy beautiful. And their journey seemed reminiscent of Tom Sawyer floating down the Mississippi with Jim. All in all: it was a great story, told pretty well, from an interesting idea.
